PCNL Surgery
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the preferred treatment for large kidney stones (usually larger than 2 cm) or complex staghorn stones. Through a small puncture in the flank, a nephroscope is passed directly into the kidney and the stone is broken and removed under endoscopic and fluoroscopic guidance.
Who may need PCNL?
Patients with large or multiple kidney stones, stones that have not cleared with other treatments, or stones causing infection or blockage.
Key benefits
- High stone-free rate for large stones
- Only a small (about 1 cm) incision
- Shorter hospital stay than open surgery
- Faster return to daily activities
