Kidney stones are among the most painful urological problems — and once you have had one, the chance of another is high. The good news is that simple daily habits can significantly reduce your risk.
1. Drink enough water
Aim to pass about 2.5 litres of urine a day. Pale yellow urine is a good sign that you are drinking enough.
2. Reduce salt
High salt intake increases calcium in the urine. Cut down on packaged and fried foods, pickles and papad.
3. Don't avoid calcium
Dietary calcium from milk and curd actually binds oxalate in the gut. Avoid unnecessary calcium supplements unless prescribed.
4. Limit high-oxalate foods
Spinach, nuts, chocolate and strong tea are high in oxalate — enjoy them in moderation.
5. Watch animal protein
Too much red meat raises uric acid and stone risk.
6. Add citrus
Lemon water provides citrate, a natural stone inhibitor.
7. Get a stone analysis
